VASTU SHASTRA GUIDELINES- ENTRANCE DOOR

Vastu is a science that explains how to create a building that vibrates with Universal Energy. Every time you enter your house you activate a presiding energy in relationship to the mandala of the house at that point. A door must be precisely located for activation of most beneficial energy. As Vastu is a science, there is a logical explanation for every guideline.

ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA, WHERE SHOULD THE MAIN DOOR BE LOCATED?
The main entrance should be auspiciously located. In general, the influence of a building orientation with proper entrance location is as follows:

East: physical comfort and mental peace,
South: salvation, redemption, freedom from earthly worries, moksha,
(However, south-oriented entrance is not the most recommended for householders who favor material prosperity.)
West: material prosperity,
North: general prosperity.

* North-facing door should be in the center or favoring toward the west side of the north wall. If you divide your north wall into 9 equal parts, the main door can be located in the central or 4th or 3rd part from the North-West corner. The Reason - Its preferable to have as many window openings in the North and East to allow sunlight constantly, through the day. Since the door is opaque, it should be placed more to the West.

* South-facing main door must not be in the center of the building. If you divide your south wall into 9 equal parts or modules, the main door on the south can be located in the 4th or 6th module. The Reason -

* West-facing door can be located south of center and not north of center. If you divide the west wall into 9 equal modules, the main door can be located in the 3rd or 4th module from the South West corner. The Reason - Its preferable to have more window openings towards the North and East to allow sunlight constantly, through the day. Since the door is opaque, it should be placed more to the South in the wall.

* East-facing main door can be located in the centre of the East wall, but a little more to the North-East. The Reason - Since the North East corner of a plot is to be left open, for sunlight to enter the house, it makes sense to enter from this space but by leaving as much of window openings towards North and East.

Thus you can see in Vastu, there is no bad location for a main door. Its the pseudo vastu pundits who claim that South and West entrances are bad and entrance door should only be in the North or East, because they take the vastu shastra guidelines too literally - Since Vastu recommends more open space in the north and East, it makes sense to have the entrance from either of these directions. But it's not a hard and fast rule.

IN VASTU SHASTRA, ARE THERE ANY SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE MAIN DOOR?

* The main door should not be situated across from the main door of another house. The entrance doors of two houses should not be exactly opposing one another. Neither should two houses share a common entrance. The Reason - It is quite uncomfortable when both the doors are open, as one unconsciously tends to look into the other house.

* The main door of the house should not be in the extreme corners. The Reason - If the door is in the extreme corner, it will be difficult to place the furniture in the room as the corner is used for movement.

* It is considered auspicious if the entrance to the property and the main door of the house are on the same side. It is not considered good if the main door to the house is on the opposite side to the entrance of the property. The Reason - It doesn't make sense to have the entrance on one side and then have the main door on the opposite side as guests and outsiders are forced to walk right across the length of the site, thus invading into the privacy of the inmates.

* There should not be an underground tank, septic tank, or canal under the main entrance. The Reason - In case the tank has to be opened or cleaned, it can be very inconvenient if it is right in front of the main door.

* There should not be any abandoned, wrecked buildings in front of the main entrance. The Reason - It is quite disconcerting, every time you open the door to see an eerie looking building right in front of you.

* In Vastu, when one enters the house, there should not be a wall in front of the entrance. There should be a door that opens to the next room in line of sight, opposite the main door. The Reason - The fresh air entering the house, every time you open the door, can flow into the rest of the house and finally go out from the exit. This allows the house to breathe properly.

* It is best that a house has an entrance and an exit. The exit door should be smaller than the entrance. The Reason - The fresh air entering into the house through the entrance, will go out through the exit and thus be forced to pass through the rest of the house, thus allowing the house to breathe.

* The main door of the house should be larger than the other doors of the house. The main door should open to the inside of the building, and swing open in a clockwise motion. The Reason - It feels inviting when the main door is large and also stuff can be brought in from outside without difficulty. If the door swings open in a clockwise motion, you use your left hand to open the door for the guests, thus enabling you to guide them in with your right hand.

* T
he doors that shut and close by themselves are not good. Doors that creak are also not auspicious. The Reason - With the self closing locks available nowadays, the doors can shut and close by themselves, but there is the risk that the door will close in the breeze while the keys are inside the house. Doors that creak indicate bad workmanship and that the door hinges are not well oiled.

* Doors should have thresholds. Shoes should not be kept in front of the door, but to the side. The Reason - The threshold will deter ants and other pests from entering into the house. The shoes in front of the door can be an eyesore for guests.

* It is good to decorate a house’s entrance with pictures or statues of auspicious signs and OM or the Swastika. Inauspicious pictures should not be on the door. The Reason - When you or a guest stand in front of the door it is better to see some pleasant images instead of just a plain door.
* Wood of Honne, Teak, Sal, Matti etc are good for the doors. Wood from Peepal, Coconut, trees giving flowers and fruits out of season, Thorny trees, Fragrant trees, etc should not be used. The Reason - Its important to protect useful trees that provide us with fruit etc.
