VASTU SHASTRA GUIDELINES - LIVING ROOM

Vastu Shastra lays down guidelines on the design of houses. While many regard Vastu as a superstition, in reality it is a science, developed thousands of years ago by the ancient Indian Architects. They laid down these guidelines with the aim to create buildings that vibrate with Universal Energy and brimming with good positive energy by manipulating the elements of nature, so that the inmates always have a sense of well being and contentment. As these guidelines have a scientific basis I have explained them here along with the possible logic and reasoning.

WHICH IS THE BEST LOCATION OF THE LIVING ROOM, ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA?
The Living Room is the room where guests are entertained and made to sit, once they enter the house. This is the room where they make their first impression. Members of a family also sit around, and have their daily discussions here. In a way, the living room is the heart of a home. Since the living room should be near the entrance, the ideal location of a living room is based on the direction a house faces:
* The living room can be in the North-East for a north or east facing house.
* For a west facing house, the living room can be in the North-West.
* For a south facing house, one can have a South-East living room.
* A living room can also, be in the central east, central west, central north or central south of a house.

WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES FOR ARRANGEMENT OF FURNITURE IN THE LIVING ROOM?
* Sofa sets can be against the south and west walls or if no other choice, the East walls. The Reason - It is best to have big window openings on the North and East walls as they allow the constant North light and the morning East light. So it is better not to obstruct these windows with furniture.

* The sofa arrangement should not be cluttered and should allow for free movement from the living room into other rooms. The Reason - It is obvious that a cluttered arrangement will not allow for free movement and creates tension in our ordered minds.

* The furniture should not face protruding and sharp corners of columns or pillars. Such protrusions and sharp corners can be aesthetically camouflaged with indoor plants. The Reason - These sharp edges can be dangerous when moving around and also can cause damage to the furniture when moved against them. Hence it is better to camouflage them by placing something in front of them.

* Carpets and rugs can be placed in colors that correspond to your astrological signs and the direction you place them in. Ancient texts identify certain planets (and directions) with certain colors as follows:
East - Sun - Copper Red
Southeast - Venus - Rainbow Colors
South - Mars - Red
Southwest - Rahu - Dull colors of Blue
South - Saturn - Black or Blue
Northwest - Moon - White
North - Jupiter - Yellow
Northeast - Mercury - Green

* If a television set is required in the living room, it can be placed such that it is viewed facing the east or north. The Reason - Since one tends to sit in front of the T.V. for long hours, it makes sense to sit facing North or East, as you can be exposed to the suns rays, entering from the north or East windows.

* Devices like air conditioners, air coolers, etc., can also be placed on the West walls and not the South-East since West represents Vayu (Air) while South-East represents Agni (Fire). The Reason - The West wall tends to get heated up the most in the evenings and night, hence it is logical to have Air coolers or air conditioners releasing cool air, on this side.

* Fire places can be the South-East or North-West corners of the living room but never to the northeast and southwest corners, since South-East represents Agni (Fire) While North-East represents Water. The Reason- The North-East corner is to be left open for the suns rays to enter the house, so naturally blocking it with a fireplace is not adv

* A small water fountain that runs throughout the day, and made of natural materials like copper, stone, glass, clay, stainless steel, bamboo, etc., is recommended in the North Part of the Living room and can be wall, floor or tabletop mounted. Or you can have a small fish aquarium. The Reason - The soft and soothing sounds of the water are pleasant to the ear and watching fish moving around is also a very relaxing pastime. This helps in the better interaction between the family members and guests.

* The use of paintings and pictures can create an active ambience and respite. As a rule, avoid paintings that depict death, violence and negative aspects of life.
The North Wall can have paintings/pictures of water bodies to stimulate the positive aspect of the primary element water.
The East wall can have a painting or picture of the rising sun — the beginning of the dawn of a day.
The South and West walls can have innovative paintings of a gentle elephant herd, high rise mountains with heavy plant life and similar pictures or paintings that denote strength.

* In Vastu Shastra, exposed beams in the living room create an imbalance in the primary elements in general, and could cause discord, friction and difference of opinions among the family members or the guests. The balance can be partly restored by concealing beams with the help of a false ceiling. As a rule avoid sitting under a beam as it excites your stress zone and disturbs your rational judgment in matters of importance. The Reason - When sitting in a room with an exposed beam, your peripheral eye vision is constantly disturbed as the ceiling is not uniform and the beam is projecting out. It is just like the feeling of irritation you get with a small speck of dirt on a clean surface. So it is better to conceal the beam.

* The walls should be painted white, yellow, green, or blue, never red or black. The Reason - The Living room is engulfed with light from the north and East sides and if it is painted in light colours, the room will be bright and appear large also.
