VASTU SHASTRA GUIDELINES- LOCATION OF SITE

Vastu Shastra lays down guidelines on different aspects of the selection of site such as Site Location, Site Shape, Site soil & Site Slope. While many regard Vastu as a superstition, in reality it is a science, developed thousands of years ago by the ancient Indian Architects. They laid down these guidelines with the aim to create buildings that vibrate with Universal Energy and brimming with good positive energy by manipulating the elements of nature, so that the inmates always have a sense of well being and contentment. As these guidelines have a scientific basis I have explained them here along with the possible logic and reasoning.

ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA IS SITE SELECTION VERY IMPORTANT?

When you are planning to build a house, the first thing you will look out for is a SITE. According to Vastu Shastra, the selection of site is an important consideration since the plot represents a fixed form, that will radiate positive as well as negative energies depending on its shape, proportion, direction and location. In case you already have a Site, there are certain aspects about Sites, as per Vastu Shastra, that you can consider and if necessary, make corrections.
Normally an Architect is not involved at the time of buying a Site. But as an Architect myself, I suggest that if you have the choice, it is better to involve an Architect early on, right at the time of selecting a Site as his inputs could be very valuable in deciding a Site. Normally, the points an Architect will keep in mind while selecting a site, will by default be in accordance with Vastu Shastra, since Vastu principles are always based on Logic.

ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA, WHAT IS THE BEST LOCATION OF A SITE?
The best location for a plot is in a peaceful and calm place, with lot of greenery and good water source and good soil. When purchasing a property, it is a good idea to stand on the land and feel its vibration for a few moments. Trust your feelings. If you feel positive about it, consider buying the land. If not, it is probably not good for you. It is best to buy land where happy and successful people have lived. However, some locations are not at all suitable for houses and they are listed below:

*A house sold by a person in distress or who is impoverished, should be purchased only with caution. The Reasoning - You feel psychologically unhappy and guilty, knowing that the site was sold out of helplessness and that the previous owner must be still holding onto it.

*A dilapidated or haunted house should not be purchased at all. The site should not be purchased if in the recent past someone has committed suicide on it, or if there have been several deaths over a period of a couple of months. The Reasoning - You may psychologically feel uneasy if you happen to know of such a past.

* The plot should not be abutting any public place like temple, hospital, factory, school, college, Kalyan Mantapa etc The Reasoning - As these places will constantly be crowded and noisy. It should preferably be at least 80 ft away.

* The plot should not be near a meat shop, workshop, leather tannery, laundry, shoe shop, etcThe Reasoning - The stench emanating from these places will permeate the house permanently and naturally not create a relaxed atmosphere in the house.

* A plot situated between two larger plots is not considered good. The reasoning behind this is that the owner of the smaller plot can construct only a much smaller house than the owners of the larger plots and thus, may subconsciously feel 'small' with respect to the neighbours. This can create a feeling of inferiority in the owner.

* Don't buy a plot with obstructions like hills, tall buildings or towers on the north, north east or east sides. The Reasoning - The useful morning sun’s rays will be blocked. However having such obstructions on the west or south sides are considered good as they block the harmful western rays.

* Similarly, a plot having an electrical power supply station or large electric pole on the north east side of the plot it is not good. The Reasoning - It is an obstruction and can create bad electric vibrations, that can enter the house from the open North - East corner.

* If the plot is a small one, there should not be trees like Peepul, Mango, Banyan, Tamarind etc on it. The Reasoning - These trees have far-spreading roots and branches, which can cause damage to the building. However, if the Site is quite big, it is good to have these trees, but away from the building.

ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA WHICH IS THE BEST DIRECTION FOR A SITE?
The direction that the front of a property faces is important. The front of the site is the side facing the road. According to Vastu Shastra:
- A Plot facing East is good for scholars, philosophers, priests, professors, teachers etc. as east (morning sun rays) is considered the source of enlightenment.
- A Plot facing North is good for those in power, administration and those who work for government.
- A Plot facing South is good for business class and for those who work in business organisations.
- A Plot facing West is for those who provide supporting services to the society.
If the plot does not squarely face the four cardinal directions, and if the road does not run in one of the four cardinal directions, the house should be built facing the four directions.

The Reasoning
-
In any city or town, there are roads in all four directions and naturally there have to be houses on both sides of the roads. Also, the city looks more aesthetic if there are houses in all the four directions. Hence, according to Vastu, all plots are considered good. It is the pseudo vastu pundits who say that south or west facing sites are not good.
The reason why vastu attributes each direction to a different class of people, is because in the ancient times Indian society was divided into four classes of people based on their occupations. But gradually these classes became castes and there was very little social mixing between the castes and so people of each caste preferred being with their own people. Hence their homes were also grouped together.

- A plot with roads running along on all four sides is the best - it ensures health, wealth and happiness. The Reasoning - This is because a site with roads on all four sides is not abutting any body's property and hence one can derive maximum lighting and ventilation from all four sides.

- A plot with more than one road is always better for the same reason that the site can have better lighting and ventilation. And preferably the roads should be on the North and East sides, so that more light and air can enter from these sides in the mornings.

- A plot with a water source, (well, sump etc) in the North or East or North-East is considered good. The Reasoning - as the morning sun's rays which engulf the North-East corner in the morning, can purify the water.

- The plot facing a T or Y intersection are generally not auspicious. The Reasoning -This is because you can see oncoming traffic and this may make you feel a bit nervous or a lack of privacy. However, in some cases, as explained below, such sites are acceptable.

ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA, WHAT IS VEEDI SHOOLA?
Sites facing a T or Y intersection, where roads or lanes run right into the face of the site from different directions are called VEEDI (road) SHOOLAS (Arrows) or THERUKUTHUS.
Since it is difficult to comment on the different permutations and combinations of roads, oncoming roads, directions etc, that form the Veedi Shoolas, let us examine the basic considerations, in naming them as good, not bad, bad and very bad.

( N--NE ) If the oncoming road is from the North, and hits the North-East part of the site it is considered a good site.

( E--NE ) If the oncoming road is from the East, and hits the North-East part of the site, it is considered a good site.

( S--SE ) If the oncoming road is from the South, and hits the South- East part of the site, it is considered as a not bad site.

( W / NW ) If the oncoming road is from the West, and hits the North- West part of the site, it is considered as a not bad site.

( E / SE ) If the oncoming road is from the East, and hits the South- East part of the site, it is considered a bad site.

( N / NW) If the oncoming road is from the North, and hits the North-West part of the site, it is considered a bad site.

( S / SW ) If the oncoming road is from the South, and hits the South-West part of the site, it is considered a very bad site.

( W / SW ) If the oncoming road is from the West, and hits the South-West part of the site, it is considered a very bad site.

ARE THERE ANY CORRECTIONS FOR VEEDI SHOOLAS IN VASTU SHASTRA?
If your site is facing an intersection, or Veedi Shoola, as you can see the oncoming traffic and people, you may feel a bit nervous or a lack of privacy. In order to overcome this, you can use the corner of the site that faces the intersection as a garage or car porch etc so that the main house is not facing the intersection. Or you could fence off that part and use it for some other purpose like a garden or outhouse etc.
