VASTU SHASTRA GUIDELINES - SITE SHAPE

Vastu Shastra lays down guidelines on different aspects of the selection of site such as Site Location, Site Shape, Site soil & Site Slope. While many regard Vastu as a superstition, in reality it is a science, developed thousands of years ago by the ancient Indian Architects. They laid down these guidelines with the aim to create buildings that vibrate with Universal Energy and brimming with good positive energy by manipulating the elements of nature, so that the inmates always have a sense of well being and contentment. As these guidelines have a scientific basis I have explained them here along with the possible logic and reasoning.

ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA WHAT IS THE BEST SHAPE FOR SITES?
According to Vastu Shastra, the shape of the plot is important and the best shapes for plots are square or rectangular, facing squarely on the four cardinal directions.
The main reasoning behind this was that, in ancient times, the houses in India were generally designed around a central square courtyard, as this ensured a good flow of air, good ventilation and lighting, and adequate cooling to all the rooms especially during the harsh summers. Also square or rectangle shaped houses were always considered most practical to use.
Today, in the modern context, as an Architect, I also subscribe to this view. I find the rectangle shape the best for sites-It is easier to design a house on rectangular lines since this allows for a good flow of spaces and the proportion of the rectangle's sides are most comfortable. It may be for this reason that sites in cities are usually available in rectangle shapes such as 30'x40', 40'x60', 50'x80' etc.

ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA, WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT SHAPED PLOTS?

According to Vastu Shastra, the plot shape affects the well being of the inmates. Some shapes have a good effect, while others have a bad effect and some others can be used after making corrections by building a 'vastu' compound wall in a suitable shape.
Here, I have described the effects of different shaped plots according to Vastu Shastra and I have also explained the probable reasoning:

SQUARE - According to Vastu, the square site is considered the best shape. It ensures it's inmates all round prosperity and happiness. The reasoning - In the earlier times, since most houses were designed around a central square courtyard, a square site was considered the best, as the site could be used fully, without any wastage.

RECTANGLE
- According to Vastu, the Rectangle is also considered good and it is better that the longer sides run north to south rather than west to east. It bestows good health, wealth and prosperity. The reasoning - Like in a square site, it would be easy to design a square or rectangle shaped house in a rectangle site even though there would be some extra land around the house. But this space was used for trees, cowshed etc and hence was not wasted.

TRIANGLE -According to Vastu, this shape is not good as it affects progress and may cause court litigations and other problems from the government. The reasoning - In a triangular site, it would be difficult to design a square or rectangular house and there would be a lot of wastage of land on all three corners.

CIRCULAR/ELLIPTICAL/OVAL -According to Vastu, this is good for constructing circular/elliptical shaped buildings only and hence are not suitable for houses. The reasoning - Just like in a triangle shaped site, it would be difficult to construct a rectangle or square house and there would be a lot of odd shaped waste land around and hence was not considered worth buying for a house.

PENTAGON, HEXAGON, OCTAGON - According to Vastu, these shapes are not considered good as they will cause constant mental turbulence. However, if these shapes are made rectangular or square by building a Vastu compound wall, so that it appears to be a square or rectangular site, it can be used. The reasoning - Just like in a triangle shaped site there would be lot of wastage of land around the building and so is was not considered worth the money you spend for the land.

L-SHAPED PLOTS - According to Vastu, a L-shaped plot is not auspicious and hence should not be purchased for a house. The Reasoning - It would be difficult to design a square or rectangle shaped house in a L-shaped plot.

GAU-MUKH (COW FACED) - According to Vastu, if the plot is narrow in the front and wide at the back, like the face of a cow, it is auspicious. The reasoning - A square or rectangle shaped house could be designed in this plot with some excess land in the back which could be used for various things like a kitchen garden, cowshed etc.

SIMHA-MUKH (LION FACED) - According to Vastu, if the plot is wide in the front or entrance and narrow at the back, like the face of a lion, it is inauspicious. The reasoning - In this plot, though a rectangle or square shaped house could be designed, the excess land would be in the front, and a cowshed or kitchen garden could not be placed here. So the excess space would be wasted and hence not considered worth the money spent.

PLOTS WITH CUT CORNERS - According to Vastu, plots with cut corners are not good. If possible, you should be able to purchase the cut part as well, so that the site looks whole. The reasoning - It would be difficult to design a house if any of the corners are cut, as some parts of the house would not have proper ventilation.
If the cut corner is in the northeast side it is not auspicious and should not be purchased. It is like a headless body, because as per vastu purusha mandala, the vastu purusha's head lies in the North-East. The reasoning - The North-East is the direction from which the sun light engulfs the house in the morning and hence should be kept open without any obstructions. So if it belongs to someone else, that portion cannot be kept open to the useful sunlight.

PLOTS WITH PROJECTIONS /EXTENSIONS-
Plots with North East corner projected towards East or North are good. The reasoning -The North-East is the direction from which the sun light engulfs the house in the morning and so if this corner is projected, there can be a lot more open space that will ensure more sunlight.

Plots with North-West, South-East, South-West corners projected are not considered good but can be used after corrections by building a vastu compound wall.
